GATTON PARK OUTING
On Wednesday 19th February 2025,
19 members of HORLEY & District U3a
Out & About Group visited GATTON PARK.
Beryl Waters organised this Event.
Report provided by Jill Jilani
We were guided by the very knowledgeable Paul Fletcher. He gave us comprehensive information about the history of the house and garden.
The views, from the parterre at the back of the house, across the main lake to the North Downs, are impressive.
This was a primarily a ‘SNOWDROP WALK’ and whilst walking in the beautifully landscaped Rock Garden we saw varieties of snowdrops.

From there we walked over to the other side of the house, to the Japanese Garden. Apparently, some years ago, Monty Don & Team had a hand in re-designing and landscaping this area.
We then walked up to the church. The exterior is a ‘mish-mash’ of styles and building materials, some as early as 13th century, but mostly restored much later.
The interior is very unusual as it has been largely covered with dark wood, carved panelling, acquired by one of its owners, from Belgium in the 19th century.
Although it was a bitterly cold day, the sun did come out. We were all grateful for hot tea and cake at the end of the tour.
A very pleasant afternoon was had by all.
